About two years ago, Elon Musk made an offer to Nicole Shanahan, the Silicon Valley attorney who would go on to join Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s independent presidential campaign as his running mate, according to a report in The New York Times published on Tuesday.
Musk suggested to Shanahan that he could offer his sperm, via in vitro fertilization, should she want to expand her family, The Times reported, citing two people familiar with the conversation. Shanahan, who has a child with her former husband, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, is said to have declined the overture.
Shanahan was one of several people in his orbit whom Musk has offered to personally assist with conception, according to the report.
The Tesla CEO and the world’s richest man frequently voices concerns about declining birth rates in developing countries. He has fathered at least 11 children with three women and is building a large compound in Austin, Texas, which, according to The Times, could serve as a central base for his extensive and unconventional family.
Shanahan’s Silicon Valley background and wealth have uniquely supported Kennedy’s campaign, though her involvement has occasionally sparked controversy. Before her relationship with Kennedy, Shanahan reportedly had a brief involvement with Musk in 2021, which was rumored to have strained her marriage to Sergey Brin.
Musk’s proposal reflects the tech billionaire’s unconventional approach to personal relationships. Known for his close circles and focus on human reproduction, Musk has reportedly offered similar assistance to others, highlighting his broader concerns about declining global birth rates.
Both Musk and Shanahan declined to comment on the recent report, which has drawn significant public interest due to the high-profile lives and ambitions of those involved.
